I’ll Be Your Mirror (Alto Beta Gallery, 2025)
I’ll Be Your Mirror is a group of made-up portraits of iconic music stars of the 60’s, which I didn’t get to appreciate while they were in their prime, for I was a bit too young. Most of the scenes, bodies, even faces are re-imagined, as my associations with them largely exist in my imagination. While my nostalgia for these stars maybe borrowed, the catalyst for these portraits was the fact that these stars in their photographs really revealed their, in a sense, the “not quite knowing what they were doing yet, and the innocent energy of just going for it”– I found that worthy of capturing in a painting.
Bob Dylan even said in an interview in his 40’s, that he can’t tap into what came to him so easily back then. The best of these particular artists’ work really happened while they were the most beautiful and young.
The titles of each painting (except for Nico) were chosen from songs featuring clouds in their lyrics.
